Alpine

Cud
  • a ball of food forced up into the mouth from the first stomach of a ruminant and chewed over again.

  • plants that drop their leaves every year.
Delayed implantation
  • a phenomenon in which the fertilized egg, ovum, develops to the blastocyst stage and then lies dormant in the uterus until suitable day length results in proper conditions for development.
Digitigrade
  • walks on the toes without using the sole of the foot.
Diurnal
  • active during the daylight hours.
Foliage
  • leaves of a tree or bush.
Forbs

Prehensile
  • capable of precise movement and adapted for grasping or holding by wrapping around.

  • able to produce large numbers of offspring.
Ruminant
  • even toed, cud chewing mammals such as deer, sheep, and cattle, which have four chambered stomachs.
Rump
  • the back portion of a mammal surrounding the tail.
Rut
  • a period of sexual excitement, the breeding season of large ungulates.
Scavenger
  • a mammal that feeds on carrion, garbage, or the leftovers of other animal's kills.
Solitary
  • a mammal that prefers to live alone and avoids the company of others of its species.

Territory

  • a state in which the metabolism drops to abnormally low levels, a means of conserving energy
