That's kinda creepy, reminds me of that Simpsons episode with the dolphins..

But other than that i think it's cool, is it a sorta 'pidgin' language or are they just mimicking eachother?

our teacher said scientists were astonished when they heard it. i dont believe thats true. for one thing, they like jumping over small boats. and if you heard that more than a year ago, it probably isnt true since its just the latest generation

Just because they jump over small boats doesn't mean they can't also use it for scanning the area. They jump for fun, of course, but if say they are in an unknown area, I'm sure they would like to scan what's outside of the water to see what's around them.
I guess it's kind of like us around a huge river in Florida. You'll have to be cautious if there is a crocodile/alligator around. Sure, they can be on land like how we are, but some might be underwater, waiting for your arrival.

Oh, jeez, talk about CREEPY! Shocked

Back OT... I wonder if this 'new language' will affect the Guyana/Bottlenose dolphins' contact with other species? I don't know much about dolphins at all Embarassed

*shiver* I can just imagine the dolphins taking over computers and TVs and playing videos of them..

Dolphins are interesting, i prefer porpoise though.

DID YOU KNOW!?

Dolphins don't make that " ah ah ah haha ah " noise, they make random high pitched noises.

(( I'm hyper right now... OOH SHINY))

I heard somewhere that dolphins actually have evolved minds that are capable of self-awareness and reason like our brains. Thats how they are solving the language problem, most likely. :3 Dolphins are awesome.

If I point at the ground and there is food where I'm pointing, she runs right to it.

same here ever since i saw a dolphin in a book once i was hooked. i even have a giant dolphin collection, whether it's a stuffed animal all the way 2 a special edition clock!!!!!!!!!

this is directed at alex/kitsune.first of all dolphins just don't jump out of water 4 fun they do it 2 breath. second they don't "scan the area" they use echolocation (AKA sonar) to see where they r going in dark water. thirdly they cant use sonar to see out of water and when u think of a dolphin using sonar think of a bat and how it sees at night.

Again, please try not to double post dolphin, thanks!

And actually, they breach not to breathe, but for other reasons. ^^"
They go to the surface to breathe, but they don't need to waste precious energy jumping every time they need a breath.

Quote:
There is an ongoing debate about why dolphins jump out of the water.

Scientists think about different reasons of this behavior.

Among them, some think that dolphins jump while traveling to save energy as going through the air consume less energy than going through the water.

Some other think that jumping is to get a better view of distant things, mainly food. So, in this way, dolphins jump to locate food or food related activity like seagulls eating or pelicans hunting.

Other explanation suggest that dolphins use jumping to communicate either with a mate or with another pod.

Some people even think that dolphins jump for cleaning, trying to get rid of parasites while jumping.

Finally some scientist think that they are only having good fun, as playing helps to keep senses at their best.
