Ahh. That would stink for the parents and the babies. All the endless snacking and endless heat only for all the effort to be lost in one big *gulp*. I hope the other two survive and live nice long lives and raise kids just like their parents.

Up at sunrise looking for them. I could hear one calling. Followed the sound. The calling was coming from across the street in some cedars. This probably isn't more than around 150 feet from their nest site. The bad news is, this is where the blue jays were calling and making a fuss yesterday morning. The jays may have gotten one of them yesterday. I probably won't be able to figure it out any better than this for now.

We put this box up in 2007 hoping to have bluebirds, but they didn't come until this year. My hopes are that as many as possible survive. I want them to come back and use this nest site again in the future.

One other note, as I approached the place where I heard the calling, I saw a cat or raccoon (couldn't be sure which) skulking along the edged of the road and then it darted into the woods as I approached.

Countless families or perhaps family of house sparrows nest under my roof. I don't mind its just that most of the nests were blown down during storms and even when chicks and eggs were still inside yet they still build in the same location though I fixed it up a bit that now the wind won't blow them down. Hopefully one will make it or perhaps the same pair a blue birds will choose the same nest as the house sparrows have.

Aww, that's sad to hear one was taken. But, the jay has to eat too, its the way of life.
I'm hoping the two others are ok, i'm sure they'll pull through.

Today 3 blue birds were spotted. The male went into the house (the one we watched) and then the female landed on the house and looked around.

We think this was our family. So at least one baby is alive for sure. We can't be sure about the other baby.

What were they looking for in the house the missing bird or missing birds?
Or thinking about starting another nest?

Perhaps both? Isn't it a bit soon to start a whole new nest already?

Seem like it.
Plus, I was thinking it might be too late to start another nest.

There was one more sighting yesterday of the father and one baby.
The baby was begging for food from the father.

Let's keep our fingers crossed. I'm hoping the baby makes it to full adulthood.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the runt of the clutch was the one who lived? Sad

I have a suspicion this could be the case. I was thinking that the first one out of the nest was the biggest one, because that one was first into the hole. And it was the first one out of the nest that hit the ground, and not the trees and was therefore killed.
Then bird #2 and #3 went out and both landed in a nearby tree.
I think 3 followed 2 because they landed very close to each other.
